About
Editorial Standards
Most owners sell a business once. Brokers, buyers and advisors do it every week. This site exists to close that gap with plain-English explanations of how a sale actually works.
Who we are
Selling My Business Guide is written by a small editorial team that researches how small and mid-size businesses are bought and sold. It is independent: no broker, buyer or advisor pays to appear in or influence our guides.
How the guides are written
Each guide answers one question owners actually ask, starting with a short summary and then the detail. The date at the top of every guide shows when it was last updated.
Sources and objectivity
Every fact and figure is cited to a public source: government agencies such as the IRS and SBA, and established market data from publishers such as BizBuySell and Investopedia. Each guide lists its sources at the end. We don't accept payment to recommend brokers, buyers or services, and where options compete, such as selling with or without a broker, we set out the trade-offs rather than pick a winner.
Contact and corrections
Spotted an error, an outdated figure or a broken source link, or have a question? Send it with the form below. We review every correction and update the guide's date when we change it.
What this site is not
It is educational content, not legal, tax or financial advice. Every sale is different. Before you sign anything, talk to a CPA and a lawyer who handle business sales. See our terms of use andprivacy policy.
